Seasons at the Apple Barn

Seasonal changes offer a variety of experiences at Kimmel Orchard-from cherry harvest in June to the first ripe peaches of July, from cider-pressings in warm September to hayrack rides in crisp November.

But at the newly expanded Apple Barn-a familiar stop for generations of travelers along Old Highway 75-there's something for everyone all year-round.

A rare Kregel windmill, manufactured locally, greets visitors at the entrance, and nearby demonstration plots of grapes and dwarf tree varieties serve to remind visitors of the orchard's commitment to education and the agricultural way of life.

During the harvest seasons the Apple Barn is alive with the scent of fresh fruits and vegetables and the bustle of visitors who come to watch the fruits being gathered, sorted, or pressed into cider. At apple harvest-early September to early November-visitors can watch apple cider processed and bottled with state-of-the-art equipment. Gleaming stainless steel machines transform apples into the refreshing drink-100 percent pure with no additives or preservatives-enjoyed by thousands each year.

Apple and cherry cider are available year-round at the fresh produce market, which in addition to seasonal fruits and vegetables also offers honey, caramel apples, apple doughnuts, popcorn, fresh and frozen pies, locally produced meats, and selection of Nebraska wines.

After the last apple is picked and the air begins to chill, the Apple Barn continues to buzz as visitors gather for holiday activities, workshops, or for a quiet lunch at the Kimmel Kitchen. The gift shop features a wide range of Nebraska food products and a variety of Nebraska crafts and other gift items that celebrate the agricultural life.
