Harvest: August to November

Apples have been grown at Kimmel Orchard for nearly 80 years, and today the orchard produces a wide selection of apples that appeal to a variety of tastes and needs.

August

Early Gold If you can't wait for your favorite apples in the early fall, this variety will satisfy your need for a snacking apple.

Lodi This big, yellow fruit is good for desserts and cooking.

Paula Red This apple offers tartness usually found only in fall apples.

Zestar Zestar apples are full of flavor. The flesh is crisp and juicy with a great sugar/acid balance.

September

Gala A very sweet and popular summer apple variety.

Golden Delicious This juicy, sweet, honey-flavored apple is medium sized, clear yellow with occasional reddish highlights.

Honey Crisp This cross between a Macoun and Honeygold is crisp and juicy.

Jonagold A cross between Jonathan and Golden Delicious, this large fruit is striped red over yellow, juicy, and sweet. A very good apple for eating.

Jonathan A Kimmel Orchard favorite, this medium-sized apple has a thin, bright red-blushed skin and a crisp, juicy taste.

Ozark Gold This summer yellow variety is similar to the Golden Delicious.

Red Delicious A tough-skinned, juicy, textured apple known for its large, tapered shape and "pointed" bottom.

Shizuka is late September apple. A sister to Mutzu. Mild flavor.

October

Blushing Golden A popular Kimmel variety, its flavor is similar to a Golden Delicious but with a slightly tangy flavor associated with late season apples. Keeps well.

Braeburn A greenish apple overlaid with reddish highlights, this apple is very crisp, sweet, and has excellent flavor.

Cameo The perfect combo of sweet and tart and the flesh is extra crunchy.

Empire This cross between Red Delicious and McIntosh is sweet and bears the firmness of the McIntosh.

Fuji An excellent eating apple, large and sweet, with a crisp, fine texture.

Idared This large, yellow to bright red fruit is firm and crisp, and best suited to cooking.

Pink Lady This pink to red fruit is very attractive, with a long growing season that extends well into October.

Rome Beauty This large, red-yellow apple is great for cooking.

Suncrisp A cross between Golden Delicious and Cox's Orange, with a similar flavor to Golden Delicious. Fruit is medium-large, yellow with orange blush.

Winesap A popular favorite at Kimmel, this late season variety is medium to large with glossy bright red and yellow highlights. Tough-skinned, crisp and juicy.

Richard P. Kimmel grew up in Nebraska City where he attended school and graduated in 1915. After high school, he attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon.
